So successful have our selections of hard-hitting Kings of Europe we have put together another round. As before, if you are a serious fan of European wine then you won't find a better selection of high performing, big hitting reds! Rich, dark fruit and lashings of spice are the hallmarks of the delicious reds in this case.

Collection includes:

1 x Fortant Grand Terroirs Minervois 2018 (France)

AWARDED TROPHY: International Wine & Spirit Competition

AWARDED 95 POINTS: International Wine & Spirit Competition

"A complex and ripe start with forest fruit, a hint of blueberry and peppercorn aromas. It is full and creamy on a bold, rich palate with a massive oaked cushion of fruit. There's white pepper and a long, complex finish" International Wine & Spirit Competition

Alc: 14% - Seal: Cork

1 x Vina Zorzal Garnacha Tinto 2020 (Spain)

AWARDED 92 POINTS: Luis Gutierrez; Robert Parker's, The Wine Advocate

"The incredibly young and juicy 2020 Garnacha was produced with grapes from different villages, Corella, Cintruénigo, Fitero and Lerga, hence a regional blend that for the first time contains grapes from the cooler Lerga that adds lower pH, more freshness and complexity to the blend. They do a soft extraction in stainless steel using 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts, achieving a wine with moderate alcohol (13.47%) and good freshness (pH 3.47). I felt like the wine had gone one step up in complexity and depth from the previous vintage; it's precise, harmonious, elegant and nuanced and keeps varietal purity. It's medium-bodied and has very fine tannins with herbal freshness, reminiscent of acid berries and bay leaf. This is a steal! One to buy by the case... 137,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021" Luis Gutierrez, Robert Parker's, The Wine Advocate

Alc: 13% - Seal: Cork

1 x Viña Angela Cariñena Gran Reserva Red 2012 (Spain)

AWARDED Gold Medal: Berlin Wine Trophy

AWARDED Gold Medal: Asia Wine Trophy

A 10 year old Gran Reserva from a top family producer for under $20! A blend of 60% Tempranillo 20% Garnacha and Carignan 20%, this is astonishingly good value. It's hard to believe this wine has patiently aged for 10 years. There's still lashings of primary fruit on the nose with just a hint of dried fruit making it a really heady mix. Silky smooth, mellow plummy fruit this is a slurper and it's in the zone ready to be drunk! Delicious.

Alc: 13% - Seal: Cork

1 x Le Village du Sud Syrah 2021 (France)

"This is splendidly ripe and attractively expressed, showing dark berry, vanilla, roasted nut and dark mushroom notes with a hint of pepper spice. The palate offers ripe fruit flavours and fleshy texture, well supported by silky tannins"

East of Bordeaux and west of the Rhône, the locals call it the Midi. "Wine lovers", says the Financial Times, "would be fools to ignore what the smaller domaines of the South of France have to offer. This is France's hidden treasure - handcrafted wines at bargain prices". Sealed under screw-cap to ensure freshness!

1 x Nero Oro Nero D'Avola Appassimento Sicilia DOC 2021 (Italy)

AWARDED 93 Points & 5 Stars: Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

"It's fruit forward and inviting on the nose with dark plum, mixed spice, olive and roasted nut aromas, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate delivering ripe fruit intensity with supple texture, making it flavoursome and highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2027" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Alc: 13.5% - Seal: Screwcap

1 x Château Bois Pertuis Bordeaux 2019 (France)

GOLD MEDAL: Concours International de Lyon

"Chateau Bois Pertuis offers a lovely garnet red colour, with brilliant shades of violet. The nose is powerful, complex and offers spicy, delicate mocha and vanilla aromas. On the palate, the wine is full and well-balanced, with delicious notes of morello cherry, and chocolate. It ends on a long finish" Winemakers

Alc: 13% - Seal: Cork

OK short read
Format: Kindle
Reasonable short read. Have to doubt the facts since the author writes FDR was alive in the 1950's and he leaves out the Haitian genocide in his narrative.

Good general snapshot
Format: Paperback
This book does not serve as an academic textbook, which may not meet your specific needs. For more detailed information or clarification, it would be beneficial to access online resources or consider purchasing a college textbook. It met my needs.

A fascinating read
Format: Kindle
I found Modern Africa to be a fascinating read, because, having grown up in the 80’s, places such as Libya and Ethiopia were always in the news, but I didn’t understand their backstories. Modern Africa does a great job of laying out these stories, but in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the reader. I look forward to reading more from the author! They do a great job of making history relevant and make me want to learn more!

Quick Read - Highlights Version
Format: Kindle
The author does a decent job of overviewing what took place during this time period. You will learn how many different events connect and see what caused various developments in Africa to take place. However, it was not as in depth as I would have liked and certainly could not cover everything that transpired during this time. Probably a decent survey book for high school students, but as an adult, I would have liked to see more elaboration and depth for each segment. 124 pages is a relatively short amount of space to cover so many topics. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
